Exodus 20:1–13 NASB95
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder.
Let’s read this one together from the screens.
Exodus 20:13 NASB95
13 “You shall not murder.
Murder - 47 X in Old Testament
Same word usage in the New Testament - 12 X
Hebrew word.
Murder is a better word than Kill.

I. Bible Usage of the Word.

God commanded that we shall not murder.
The word used here is the Hebrew word that stands for killing intentionally and with premeditation.
putting to death improperly or selfishly.
There are times in the Old Testament that God commanded killing.
Capital Punishment.
Deuteronomy 19:21 NASB95
21 “Thus you shall not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Holy War.
Deuteronomy 7:2 NASB95
2 and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.
The Problem with Murder.
I. Biblical usage of the word.

II. Murder can be Silent and Unseen.

It is not always the physical act but sometimes the action of the heart.
matthew 5:21-22.
Matthew 5:21–22 NASB95
21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’ 22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Murder of another person.
1 john 3:15-18.
1 John 3:15–18 NASB95
15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
Murder of relationships.
Murder of yourself.
1 john 4:20-21.
1 John 4:20–21 NASB95
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
I. Bible usage of the word.
II. Murder can be Silent and Unseen.

III. God Created Man.

james 3:8-10.
James 3:8–10 NASB95
8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
Man has been created in the image of God.
Genesis tells us that God created man in His image.
Genesis also tells us that God said it was very good.
Man is God’s creation who are we to destroy it.
The Greatest Commandment.
matthew 22:37-40.
Matthew 22:37–40 NASB95
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
God’s love for His creation.
God does not want to see His creation destroyed.
God does not want us to destroy ourselves.
God does not want His Church destroyed.
CONCLUSION.
I. Bible usage of the word.
II. Murder can be silent and unseen.
III. God Created Man.
Why does all of this happen?
james 4:1-4.
James 4:1–4 NASB95
1 What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
